George, Many thanks for your reply - I knew I could count on you! I didn't intend this to be thread and have received a number of excellent replies to my post. Basically, George, even "nice & normal" folks (by your definition) can get AIDS. The virus doesn't care whether you are gay or straight or whether you use the missionary position. Getting tested doesn't prevent you from getting infected, but it may prevent your partner from getting infected and because there is now good treatment available, it may save your life. My reasons for posting this on techdiver at all are: 1) Tech divers are in the business of estimating and calculating life-threatening risks. It's likely they can comprehend and assess the complicated issues surrounding the risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS better than many others. (2) AIDS is spreading fast among people who are unaware that is poses a risk for them - not so fast among the informed. (3) Tech divers not only speak to their colleagues, but also to others in their community of their own ages. Because of their technical expertise in one area, there is evidence that peers will listen to what they say about other semi-scientific issues. (4) If groups/experts other than medical doctors (we have not been very good at communicating the risks) take this seriously and talk to others, maybe they'll save a few lives.
