Yesterday the FDA licensed a new test for HIV (AIDS virus) infection. So what has this got to do with tech divers? If you live in the US and are aged between 20 - 45, AIDS is now the no 1 or 2 leading cause of death for your age group. It far exceeds your likelihood of dying in a diving accident. The World Health Organization recognizes that people, especially men, who go travel out of their own country are more likely to have sex with a new partner. Many divers travel. If you have had sex with a new partner since 1975, or had a blood transfusion between 1975 and 1985, or ever shared injection needles with anyone, you should get tested for HIV infection. For people who prefer not to go to their doctor or a test center, the new home access test offers you the opportunity to get tested in private, anonymously and conveniently. I have served as a medical advisor to the developers of the test, but I have no financial interest in them or the test. Having seen it in action, I am impressed that the counseling you get (by phone) after the test is of very good quality. The test will be available in Florida and Texas very soon and in other States in a few months.
