Ok, but I'd only carry the primary reel if I *knew* I needed a
bottom line, penetration line, survey line, whatever. Given the way I
deploy those lines, I don't need a back-up; if the original is lost or
fails, it won't occur in a position I can't get home from. Admittedly,
the only times I've needed more than 42m of line (what happens to be on
my reel) I've had a 100m wrapped as a spool for transit line laying.
Personally I have a very healthy terror of line underwater, and if I
need *any* (including the normal reel) the dive is planned with that as
a major component. If I needed two reels of line, I'd have a whole new
game to play, and I'd have rewritten the rules *for that dive*.

My DRSMB wraps up about 2" dia.x 6"long and sits under my knife
straps on my thigh on any dive with more than 20m of water or needing stops.

Unfortunately very true. I get slagged for wanting a pony,
DRSMB, surface flag and often a penetration reel. The guys I'm diving
with are snorting at 'Hogarth' for being a bit of a late call (wrt the
principle of simplicity and neccessity. All I can say is, I've needed
and used everything I take. I don't need twin reels as routine.
