Could someone explain to me why, if access to restricted dive sites should
be based solely on skill, safety, and results, a diver's sexual orientation
should even enter the debate?
Was there a study I missed that found some correlation between sexual
orientation and diving ability? If not, then why do slurs of this nature
seem to appear so often on this list? They don't help the argument any,
and they do annoy the rational, reasonable folks who might still be following
the thread. Yell all you want about how it's just a joke, or whatever, but
this sort of blatant bigotry is offensive and doesn't belong here. Stick
some other category, like "women" or "<the-N-word>" or "<insert
race/religion
here>", in the sentence above and think about whether you'd post THAT to a
public list... even in jest.
BTW, gaining support (public, private, whatever) for a project or
idea often has as much to do with how the project and its principals
APPEAR to potential supporters than with the "bottom line" of what is
actually being accomplished. In an ideal world it would be different,
of course. In this world the folks who APPEAR rude, ignorant, and/or
offensive are only making the road harder for themselves, regardless of
their actual accomplishments.
