Bob, this is extremely important - not for how far you can get into a
cave
or wreck with little gas, but how far you can get out when something goes
wrong.
The conditoning is the only way to have a chance at this. Long-time divers are
relaxed, but they must be in shape to do it when the fur is flying. Swimming is
especially good as it teaches you to relax the unused muscles, and it builds
cadiovascular efficiency - for me meaning I can get more out of each breath in
terms of gas exhange and distribution - I do not need to breath so much.

The other benefit of swimming, especially sprinting in a "short course"
pool (25 meters or yards), is that you must turn frequently, which implies
gliding in , turning, and gliding out before breathing. Since you are in need
of
a breath, and the pressure on the knee joints is triggering a breathing reflex,
the ability to go without for a few strokes teaches you to overcome this
unnecessary breathing reflex while at stress so that you can work or deal with
a
big problem underwater without changing the breathing rate. In the film, you
can
see me exert without the bubbles changing.

Hard work is the only way to get this, and its the reason so few can do
it - they will not pay the price. You will, since you know all of the other ,
non-diving benefits. -G
