Subject: Re: Sealed 1st stages, was VX10 vs Tech 50D

Gentlemen:

I have a vx-10 with the sealed first stage. I also have Poseidon Odins.
On the VX-10 you unscrew the first stage metal end cap and replace it with
a new metal end cap designed to hold the silicon fluid. The end cap on
VX-10 is much, much more sturdy then the anti-freeze cap for the Poseidon
first stages. The Anti-Freeze cap for the VX-10 is thick metal and design
to protect the fluid containing rubber cup. The anti-freeze cap for the
Poseidon has a exposed rubber cup which can easily get damaged during
a dive. I don't put anti-freeze caps on my Poseidon reg's any more.
The Poseidon anti-freeze caps I had got damaged on a boat ride to a dive site
some time ago. During that dive (and dives since) the reg has worked just
as well without it and I do much of my diving in 37 degree f. water.

I can't say that the Vx-10 really needs a anti-freeze cap because this reg
only gets used on my EAN50 to 100% O2 (mostly EAN80) stage bottle. Therefore
I only use this reg during deco. at shallow depth. The water at this depth
during the spring time can also be in the 36 - 40 degree f. range. But
during most of the summer the water temp. on shallow hangs can be a warm
50 to 55 (maybe even 60) degrees f.
