Hi,Tony! The weight is hanging downwards when you are on your back so it tends to pull the counterlung downwards, in effect 'stretching' it. The counterlung is actually shaped like the belows that you use to blow a fire, with a hinge at the lower end and the weights at the other end. help this is of use.
