Subject: Re: breath-holding diving
Hello,

Maybe somebody can explain me this:

I practice breath holding in a pool (with somebody who knows cpr...)
just to be able to deal with emergencies while scuba diving. (by the way I've
seen a heavy smoker who could only hold his breath for 10 seconds and was
scuba diving!!!).

After about a little bit more than two minutes of immobility on the
bottom of the pool the urge to breath becomes quite irrisitible but then, if
I start to swim under water I can stay another 30 seconds feeling even better
than before. I didn't push this experiment too far, not knowing the "reason
why".

Is this a physical reaction or a psychological one ? I noticed that for
periods over two minutes the psychological aspect has a greater importance
but logically, I should be able to increase that time by not moving and thus
saving oxygen...

Any comments on this ? suggestions ? warnings ?

                Thanks
                                                           Gil.
