In-Reply-To: <199603031404.GAA05897@m2*.in*.co*> George, << See Eric maiken on this for the better explanation, but the model treats a slow ascent near the level of the profile like bottom time.>> Ok, if I can paraphrase - The deeper one is the more nitrogen is being absorbed because of the higher PP. What you (Buehlmann?) seem to be saying is that the intention of the faster ascent rate from depth is to get the diver into a shallower depth, where the PP of nitrogen is less, in the quickest but safest time then slow the ascent to allow off-gassing to take place. That's probably a bit simplistic but in broad terms is that correct? [fx: Select get your arse kicked mode <g>] << Why would any of you spend hundreds of dollars for a wrist computer? I don't get it. >> Remembering that I'm talking recreational diving here rather than technical diving (I.m not even sure I really know what 'technical' diving means), when I'm drifting over a coral reef in the Red Sea or over a large wreck in the English Channel, my level of planning in terms of the multiple depths I'm diving is not, perhaps, what it should be. My wrist computer will track those depths over multiple days of diving and calculate my desat times and any deco requirement accordingly. As a bonus, I can download the dive data and analyse the dive afterwards; if the unthinkable happens and I get a bend my dive profile(s) can be analysed by the team at the deco chamber from that same wrist computer. I realise that many of the lessons technical divers have learned can equally be used by those of us not pushing the envelope so hard - I put a long hose on my primary reg at the weekend. OTOH when I'm diving a reef or wreck (at relatively shallow depths) that I'm unfamiliar with I'd be unable to plan my dive to the extent that a program like Decom would (I assume) demand. In that sort of situation the wrist computer (with back-up depth gauge and timer) is ideal (IMHO of course ;~) ).
