The following is an excerpt from the most recent issue of Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine: "Skiles and Morris have been diving together for more than 20 years, most recently in Huatla, Mexico, with Bill Stone's expedition. The duo (with Paul Heinreth) hold a world record for cave penetration below an average depth of 250 feet; 4,176 feet in Wakulla Spring." I would like to start by saying that I have only met Wes and Tom a couple of times in passing and at a joint WKPP, U.S. Deep Cave Team Meeting, I have never met Paul, and I have nothing against any of these guys personaly. The problem is that they do not currently hold a world record for deep cave diving, that I'm aware of, and I'm not sure why this publication states that they do. The WKPP added over 1800' to the end of the line in "B" tunnel several months ago so its right around 6000' out. I have done the dive to the end of the Skiles, Morris, Heinreth line in B, now simply refered to as the B tunnel "AJ". In light of the fact that in '87 these guys took over 1000 cubic feet of gas and utilized a terrible gear configuration makes this dive a major accomplishment. The times I have done the B tunnel AJ it is a nice relaxed double stage with plenty of gas to explore the side tunnels. I am sure Wes, Tom, and Paul are tough divers so the only difference must be gear and configuration. How is personal preference sounding now ? The WKPP system is without a doubt the safest and best currently in use for cave diving. Rick Sankey WKPP
