George, here you go again extrapolation from zero data. Nobody has
shown that smoking or EtOH increases probability of DCS.

As a matter of fact the Chinese published an article a # of years back
where they treated DCS with EtoH instead of HBO (UHMS published it in
UBR with a disclaimer).

Studies of NAvy divers indicate that they have terrible diets, smoke &
drink relatively heavily (If I recollect correctly ~ 7% of calories
from EtoH).

THose habits are also very prevalent among commercial divers & divers
outside of the US don't even have our 'no drinking before diving rule.
The French tend to have a glass of wine for lunch & continue to
plonger. Sponge divers in Greece, Tunisia & Turkey have very high
smoker ratios.

All in all no spikes of DCS have been recorded over the years in which
those populations have been diving & stats have been available

I do not advocate that bombed individuals, rapidly taking final puffs
of their favorite weed, diving. However it is hard for me to condone
such outburst with absolutely no evidence.

As for DAN. It is not perfect, but it is the best that the
recreational diving community has available. I would take great issue
with any suggestion that it has not raised overall diving safety
consciousness. It has brought forth numerous topics that are now in
the mainstream of diving (O2 use in 1st Aid, PFO). As a matter of
fact I think that, if anything, they have a conservative approach,
rather being liberal in 'clearing for diving' (Especially in post DCS
situations & many other maladies that are not considered
counterindications to divng elsewhere in the world).

As always,

Regards
