Subject: Re: Poseiden drysuit
     Jim,
I have several hundred dives on a Unisuits. Actually, I have what is
now called "Thermopro II" suits. Poseidon changed the name of their
Unisuit to Thermopro II, and introduced a "new" Unisuit, with a
shoulder zip. Why they couldn't come up with a new name beats me.
Anyway, I think the main difference between the old unisuit
(thermopro; vertical zip) and the new unisuit (horizontal zip) is
     merely the zipper position.

     Advantages:

The suit is very comfortable. The wrist seals and neck dam are soft
neoprene. I found them more comfortable than latex, less prone to
chafe or cause an allergic reaction, and less prone to tear. When the
neoprene seals do tear, they go slowly, not catastrophically like
latex. In fact, I'm thinking of having a neoprene neck dam put on my
Viking, instead of the stock latex dam.

Urination with the old unisuit is a snap, due to the zipper design.

If the inside gets wet, the suit stays warm, since it's neoprene.

The zippers are as strong as any other drysuit.

Most divers do not wear a BC with the unisuit, because it's inherently
buoyant. Of course, this practice depends on the type of diving you
are doing, and the weight of your tanks, etc. If you do wear a BC, it
has to be a back mounted type because of the bulk of the suit, and the
placement of the valves on the chest.

     Disadvantages:
     The neoprene compresses with depth.

The suit is a bit hard to control in the first 20 feet of depth.

The dump valves tend to leak.

If you've got a single aluminum 80, you'll need about 30 pounds of
     lead.

     The suit is bulky.

All in all, I was pleased with the unisuit, and it was especially nice
when I had to spend hours waiting around while suited up. It's
comfortable, and the big zipper can be easily opened to prevent
overheating while standing in the sun, even with your tanks and belt
     on.

Time for a new drysuit. I am getting a Poseidon Unisuit and would
appreciate any comments from users of this unit. Are you getting good
life from the zipper and seals? Any hints? I have heard tell that you can
replace the seals with latex units when they wear out, have any of you
all done this? Like it?

Thanks-

   Jim
