Subject: webbing and backpacks

can anyone explain how to thread the webbing through a scubapro at-pack 
type pack so that it spreads apart at the top and doesn't constrict the 
shoulders?  I know I should have some sort of stainless or aluminum 
backplate with separate slots for each shoulder but I don't have the 
money right now and the pack I have was basically free.  Besides this one 
is great except for that one problem.
