If you say it's true I'll skip past the part about "all divers are becoming much more environmentally aware ... good buoyancy ... look-but-don't-touch". Sure. Now, I grew up in Michigan and in the old days you could win an antique car contest by putting almost any parts from any car on any car. That plus Bondo and a good paint job got you past what half of the judges knew about classic cars. And that was MICHIGAN for pete's sake. A diving equipment competition that takes place on dry land sounds a whole lot like the same thing, especially since any judge worth his/her water will know that what looks like it works is not necessarily what does work. The tiebreaking votes will then go to judges who miss that subtlety, or will go for best strokewear, which IS easy to judge on land. Oh, and be sure to keep a *real* Enviromentally Aware award on hand for someone who doesn't have anything new or clever to show off. Dave Smith U Tx School of Public Health
