Subject: Back to the CO2 question
To: TECHDIVER@terra.net
This is from my manuals and not experience (never have used a BC with
a CO2 cartridge) so flames are ok. But:

My NAUI stuff says CO2 was mainly for *emergency* inflation at the
surface, which stopped being important after low pressure hoses made
inflation about as fast and more controllable. For emergency ascents
CO2 gets an honorable mention -- adds some buoyancy [and leaves you
more in control of your ascent than you'll be if you dump much over
about 5 lbs of weight]. But with use #1 gone, and divers letting the
units rust out (too much maintenance for something you only need in
emergencies, right? And anyway you've got a buddy around somewhere ...)
they stopped being a selling point.

I think that means they were ok, but they weren't great, and they
won't be back.
