George On the MK5 it will not be available until August. It has built in a lot of features that would make it more compatiable for cave diving than any other unit I have seen being offered at this time. As you and I have discussed on several occassions if it becomes feasiable or if a need to use a rebreather in caves arises the mk5 apears to be it for fully closed and the Odessey for semi seems to offer the most safety. This may or may not be safe enough in either case. Like you and I both discussed I would still have open circuit stages all over the place for bailout in caves. I do plan to experiment( with a lot of backup) with both of these units in caves as well as open water. Ther are several other rebreathers I will dive in open water. I do not know if rebreathers are going to be a true advantage for cave diving but if they are these are the most logical ones that someone can actually buy, get factiry service and dive on. I think I have enough ability to prevent my death on rebreathers if not my family will appreciate you recovering my body on your way out. George you have stated you may use a 16 and before using a 16 you should at least look at the cis(this is not the unit we have seen in the field before) it may or may not do a better job for your objectives but at least look at it. I agree that to this date and for the foreseeable future for exploration in caves open circuit is an attractive and more safe option. Conveience and comfort may be presented by the rebreathers. I (opnion)think you will most likely wind up with some kind of a unit for open water due to these features. Also for remote difficult access places they will have some advantages and the only way to find out if they provide advantages is to work with them and see if they are personally acceptable as a risk benefit tradeoff and then cautiously experiment with them. I for one am willing to be a test pilot on this venture. I think it would be dumb to do one of the WKPP dives to the limit right off the bat with any unit. It may( or may not) with backups and open circuit bailout combined with stages become attractive once we become totally versed in these units. I'm not endorsing rebreathers for caveing I'm looking into the feasiability of their application and plan to PERSONALLY experiment with caution on their use for cave and deeper exploration. I may then either opt to forget the idea for caving or if they really prove safe and adaptable switch to them. At any rate that decision will require a lot of dives and evaluation prior to making a decision. You and I have talked about all this already. At any rate I will use them for photography and other areas of known advantage. Tom
