Didi writes: ........................ disadvantage: it uses a lot of air, if used very often & its not loud enough for surface usage(like the dive alert, which is fine on the surface, but produces underwater just a "gulp") SNIP> I once had to use my Dive Alert in anger whilst separated from our two boats in a moderate sea and force 5 winds. We must have been about 100 metres away, but due to the waves, could not be seen. No one on either boat heard the whistle. It was only when one boat's engine stalled that they heard us shouting. (I asked those aboard quite specifically). IMO, the frequency of sound is too high to penetrate through background noise on a boat, eg engine and wind noise. IMO the frequency should be lowered, to something like a normal boat aerosol type fog horn. Dive Alert is deafening at close quaters and works ok in demos where people know what to listen out for, but in a real situation where you are trying to attract a boat's attention, it is not that good. IMO Dive Alert should not be relied upon to help a boat find you. I my situation, flares would have been much more effective. Bill.Dyer@mi*.co*.uk*
