WW, Read my post. I said your FIRST stage. You're on a single 80 - your first stage takes a dump (I saw this happen to John in Fiji - luckily we were on our way up, and had two stage bottles with regs handy). If your second stage takes a dump, who cares? You switch to your backup and la-de-daa... But when the burst disc goes out on the first stage - your air is in the water real fast. Considering my scenario, you are still screwed, even if you drop your belt, tank, etc, and swim for the surface. You have no air, you are sucking your lips (as John so aptly put it) and you are wearing your neutrally buoyant lycra suit, so you have NOTHING but your own ability to remain conscious with a dwindling O2 supply in your blood (remember "shallow-water blackout?). If you go out - you would probably sink, and therefore die. Bummer. But if you had an emergency inflation device, maybe you would have a better chance of making it to surface air. That is all the question is about. I'm not advocating carrying CO2 cartridges strapped to the BC - I'm just arguing that John's question was a fair one, and that it deserved a little consideration from this list. Not many people have gone to the places he has gone, nor have many done the level of diving that he has. If this was some weenie asking the question, I could undestand the flames. But John is definately no weenie. Even though I accuse him of that sometimes. Don't waste our time telling us how "we shouldn't be in those situations" unless you dive with us, and understand the situations we encounter on our dives. Many a "technical" diver has lost it underwater, and to simply state "well, he fucked up" is to denigrate valuable lessons that we all can still learn in this sport/profession. enough said. Kevin.
