you certain they intended you to run the rubber bands through the holes???

their recent ad (in the new AquaCorps) has them hanging a light canister on
one side and an argon bottle on the other with quicklinks through these
holes...so it seems that they intended them for this purpose.

also, i've only ever seen the OMS bladder with the stretchy bands attached
only to the bladder (including my own!)...that's the way the set-up sheet
said to do it as well
i've never found that it causes any difficulty inflating AND it does help
to DEFLATE in a hurry, and more completely (even makes the large dual
bladder useable with a single tank without wrapping around and trapping
air)
