My understanding is NiCads develop a memory gel cells do not . Nicad 
batteries may be re conditioned by totally discharging them  by 
placing a load on them (light) remove the load and let the nicad set 
a few hours without a load then discharge again. Repeat this process 
several times, you should now be able to recharge the nicad battery
