This kind of selfish dichotomy is so common as to avoid comment. As a receiver I want a functional reg asap as a donor I want to give him anything except the one in my mouth. What's confusing about that. If he comes to me and asks, then the situation is not an emergency, and I can *decide* what to do, but as a flash response (in the absence of any other training) I'll whip my spare to him, whilst he will grab for the nearest reg. I don't believe that it'll be the one in your mouth in *many* situations; a lot of the time he won't even see that. > The logic is so simple and irrefutable that I don't understand how > people can continue to argue with it - THE ONLY WAY TO DONATE A REG > THAT IS KNOWN TO BE WORKING IS TO DONATE THE ONE YOU ARE BREATHING. > If anybody can refute that, then I'll see Sallot's 104s and raise him > a set of 95s :-). > So you sit there and think about it. You've been very lucky in your emergencies, and had some superb buddies, or maybe you're diving on rule 1a (only dive with superhumans!) I'd love to be able to plan my emergencies like that. > > It can come from around his neck that will be just fine, or anywhere > > for that matter. > > No, it can't come from "anywhere" - it can only come from the > donating diver's mouth. > Speak for yourself. > > a diver see your in need of air, he swims over to give you his > > backup reg. from around his neck and you say "no thanks ... > > This will never happen if you follow Rule #1 (how scary - I'm > beginning to sound like George :-). > Some of us don't get a choice in that - we'd never get to go diving! In my only OOA (reg failed shut) I was being very calm. I got his octopus so as keep the situation simple. If I wasn't being calm, I'd have still gone for his octopus *because it was all I could see*. It has a natty yellow hose cover and was nearer to me. I'd love to have seen his face if I'd tried to find his main reg. Long hose or short, it sounds like you guys have emergencies like we have ballet.
