Ok Folks'
Seems there is still some difference of opinion on the gas carrying
situation. Various reasons have been given as to why some feel it is OK to
carry
bottom gas in a stage. Some, with I guess no mix experience, seem to feel
comfortable with independant back mounted deco cylinders. This is all going to
kill somebody someday. Why?:-

(1) Carrying bottom gas in a stage: - Ridiculously low gas volume for the part
of the dive that has the biggest gas consumption. No proper redundancy in the
event of a neck O ring failure. If you end up late on run time for whatever
reason you will be low on gas you CANNOT switch to air and expect not to
sustain a CNS hit. Bottom gas should be carried in doubles with an isolation
manifold. Anybody that tries to tell me they cannot reach an isolation valve
should unsubscribe right now. Configure your equipment so you can!. Run your
hoses Right post - right side. Left post - left side.No crossing over behind
your head. That way you will know which side is the problem in the event of a
leak - and be able to deal with it.

(2) Back mounted deco gas:- Will the preponents explain how they manage a
regulator first stage failure?. I'd pay to watch somebody remove their set to
switch regulators.(perhaps they could switch back to their stage of bottom mix
to pad out the time a little).

(3) Rich mentioned something about divers having problems during the deco phase
of the dive. If this is due to gas volume - carry another stage! - sticking it
on your back solves nothing and creates a potentially fatal gas configuration.
If you cannot conduct a decompression protocol - don't do it. The easiest way
of
not getting bent through screwing up on a schedule is to (a) Do it right (b)
Don't do it.

Regards

Chris
