Richard:

Your point is: You feel the only way to for a diver to discover a fouled
regulator is to being breathing from it. I disagree!

The back up regulator regardless of which reg you are breathing from (long
hose or short hose) should be checked for proper operation prior to and
immediately after going threw any restrictions and potentially silty areas,
as well as periodically throughout the dive.
