I've also tried to get a handle on the effects of elevated inspired PPO2 on satuaration of hemoglobin. Sure, the Bohr effect still works at depth, but if you're talking about bumping up the ambient concentration of dissolved O2 by an order of magnitude, you might just have a tendency to saturate hemoglobin with O2, inhbiting (to a limited extent) its ability to carry CO2 out of the tissues. I'm sure some of the medical-types out there can shed some light on this.... > What sort of model would you use? Of course, a sample size of one makes it tough when it comes time to statistically analyze the data. Perhaps we could get some people drunk with ethanol narcosis & get them to sign liability waivers....but we'd have to let 'em sober up before we jammed them in a chamber and forced them to breathe pure oxygen at 600 feet - otherwise the results might be skewed.....:-> > For myself I'd like to avoid calling this phenonemon "oxygen narcosis". Can > you think of another name? I don't know, I wasn't the first to call it that (read the Hamilton et al. paper - I spent about two hours digging through my stacks of reprints to locate it, but no luck yet). According to Webster: narcosis: a state of stupor, unconciousness, or arrested activity produced by the influence of narcotics or other chemicals. I think my symptoms of "cold" narcosis pretty much fit this description. And last I heard, oxygen falls under the umbrella of "other chemicals", wouldn't you think? I see there's a whole list of messages on this topic I've yet to read, so I'll end this one here... (John Crea....are you still with us? I certainly HOPE that you haven't been truned off of this forum already..... Wanna jump in on this topic?) Aloha, Rich
