This is a response to specific, and quite good , gear
rigging questions.
1) CHEST STRAP - use it if you need it, don't if you
don't. Some need it because the stages get pulled
away without it. I don't use it, Gavin does, for
example.
2) BACKUP LIGHTS - rather than have a mess, unweave your
straps and slide on the retainer - (this falls under the
"do it right or don't do it at all" rule). The sooner
you get in this mindset, the sooner this sport gets
fun.
3) BACKPLATES - OMS is fine, especially for the lighweight
OMS tanks. I use a v weight since I have all types of
tanks, but mostly 104's. For the neopreme drysuit and
big insulation crowd, they may need both. Dive Rite is
fine, AUL is fine. ABS I can not deal with - why worry .
4) LINE CUTTER - must be serrated, must have metal all the
way through the handle - no K Mart specials. No parachute
cutters.
5) WHERE TO PUT MAIN REG - right post - backup on left post.
Convoluting your rig by putting your main reg on the
left post because of some horseshit about not knowing
whether it is on or off implies a failure to involke
option number one , which is DON'T DIVE ( manadatory for
strokes). There are in"stroketors" out there who INSIST
on reinventing the wheel - avoid them. Ask them how the
pro's do it.
6) GOODMAN HANDLE is the palm grip. The other thing I have is
so that I can have it in my right hand while decending
while scootering with the right hand without the light
vibrating and so that I can still aim it and so that my
left hand can be controlling both my drysuit and my wings
and my nose clearing without my beam moving or confusing
my buddy by jerking around - a fine point .
7) TALC - use it not soap
Tony, thanks for asking. - G
