I was reading Jim Greenlees's account of doing a lost line drill with Jarrod in Ginnie, and I could not help noticing the comments about jamming the reel. I am sure Jarrod explained this to Jim, but in real life we don't use reels for this purpose, we use spools. A spool can not jam, hence the term "safety" spool. Pat Watson, who is on this list, and was one of my instructors, can tell you a real life horror story of looking for a really lost line in a siltout. His dive buddy remembers the exact number of minutes it took to find the line - 7 seven. Seven minutes at 300 feet would be a full 80 under stress. If you think reels (as opposed to spools) are a good idea, I would suggest you take up golf. I put this on techdiver also, as the spool works just as well in a wreck, and I notice that Bill Deans uses them as well. - George
