There has been some heated messages here on techdiver about the posting of
the recent announcement of the formation of a third technical diving certifying
agency. I have been accused of advertising in an area where advertising is
not encourged or apparently welcome.

I would like to make a couple of thing clear:

#1) I did not post the announcement about TDI here on techdiver or anywhere
on the internet. The posting was done by Tracey Baker, who saw the original
announcement in the technical diving area on CIS, and asked my permission
to forward the announcement to the internet - specifically the techdiver
message base. I gave my permission, not knowing at the time the
mood here about advertising, and at the time I did not consider this
to be advertising.

#2) The only posting I have done about TDI has been to correct the erroneous
phone number in the original post (my fault entirely, I mistyped it in the
original post on CIS), and to answer questions about TDI that have been
specifically addressed to me.

The bottom line is that yes, I do have a financial interest in TDI, I was
invited to become a stockholder by Bret Gilliam. However, I would support
TDI even if I had no financial interest, as I feel that the technical diving
field is in need of an alternative to IANTD and ANDI. I was teaching technical
diving before the term was popular.

My basic interest in technical diving is basically one of safety. I manage
the cave diving accident files for both the NSS-CDS and the NACD, and I
noticed an increase in the number of accidents in which diving deep on
compressed air was the major factor.

As diving deep on air has 2 problems, oxygen toxicity and inert gas narcosis,
I began to teach trimix diving long before either IANDTD or ANDI were even
interested in trimix diving. By teaching trimix diving techniques, I was
able to increase the safety of the divers that were going deep (and many of
them would have gone as deep or deeper on air if they had not been trained
in trimix.).

Bottom line is that I also am against commerical advertising here on the
internet, but I agree that often there is a line between "news" and
"advertising".

I rest my case -
