Carl,

In terms of ruggedness and low power consumption, the solid state
disks from Intel or SunDisk are probably the way to go.  They are
now up to 40+ meg, and the prices are going down (latest I heard was
around $100 for a 10meg unit in quantities to manufacturers.

Most notebooks now come with PCMCIA slots that will take these solid
state disks.
