I live in England and I have never been to America bit I have dived in the Red Sea. (1) How easy is it nowadays for ordinary divers to get hold of oxygen rebreathers (a) in USA, (b) elsewhere? (2) In the 1960's and 1970's I read in sport diving periodicals that in USA there were `oxygen diving clubs' i.e. scuba diving clubs that used oxygen rebreathers only. There was also one in Canada. What happened to them? Are there any still running now? I am currently feeling the aftereffects of a long cold (6degC) shallow water dive this morning with a heavy bulky air aqualung that seemed to have been made of plutonium judging by the weight heaving it about out of the water as well as the rest of my gear; the more times I get this, the more I long for a handy light oxygen rebreather and its handy side-effect of supplying breathing gas made warm by the reaction of absorbing the CO2. P.S. Thinsulates are a handy replacement for ordinary underclothes on land during the winter.
