Yeah, In at least two other fatal accidents that I've heard of the same thing occured, the buddy(ies) all of a sudden noticed that the victim just disappeared. In the present case, if the preliminary data is true, it seems to me that the first "I wanna surface" sign did not in itself warrant any major concern for the buddy. They were near the end of the calculated bottom time. However, the second "let's get up" sign as they were heading for the ascent line could (should?) be interpreted as "I can't make it to the line, I must get up *now*!" This would indicate an emergency in which case it seems reasonable to physically grab the stricken diver, establish eye contact and make sure (s)he is able to ascend. Then again, this is just speculations and the final discussion will have to await the complete investigation. Unfortenately, the chances that the diver will be recovered are small (according to the investigators), meaning that no technical or forensic information will ever be available. /RS (o o) +------------------------------oOO--(_)--OOo-----------------------------+ | Richard Soderberg, MD, PADI DM | The Karolinska Institute | | Systems analyst | MIC-KIBIC | | Voice#: +46 8 728 80 00 | Library and | | Fax# : +46 8 33 04 81 | Medical Information Center | | Snail : PO Box 200 | Doktorsringen 21 C, | | S-177 77 Stockholm | S-104 01 Stockholm | | Email :richard.soderberg@mi*.ki*.se* | SWEDEN | +------------------------------------+-----------------------------------+
