To remove verdigris from metal, soak the metal piece in vinagar for an hour or 
two. On a tank valve, soak a washcloth in vinager, place it over the valve, 
cover it with a plastic bag and secure with a rubber band.  Wash it off with 
fresh water using an old toothbrush when you're done.

      no matter how hard you try to keep salt water out of the valve 
     opening, you will end up with thebrass  threads of the valve spindle 
     covered with verdigris (which is not only tasty, but clogs the 
     regulator's sintered filter and binds badly)
