I don't know about cattle but I dove in a creek this summer that contained 
a pair of river otters and quite a few diving birds.  I developed an infection
in both ears that kept me out of the water for about 2 months.  I also 
suspect that I had "Beaver Fever" as the antibiotic for the ear infection 
seemed to clear up some intestinal distress I was having!  The technical name
for "Beaver Fever" is something like Giardia (spelling?).
