Anybody that loves diving as much as Rod must love it wouldn't seriously suggest banning diving. The point is that outsiders might take that view when somebody does something really stupid like this. This wasn't an accident, it was an inevitability considering the way that guy behaved. The dive plan was a disaster waiting to happen. Leaving a boat unmanned with deco bottles on the line wasn't just stupid, it was suicidal. If the boat had drifted a little farther away he probably would have died in the water. Even if they carried their deco gas and made it safely to the surface, they may have drowned or died of hypothermia if they lost the boat and were too far out to swim to shore. I've left a boat unmanned before but only when doing non-deco dives with other boats around and after going down and securing the line to a wreck. I hope the guy gets better, but what he did was so blatently stupid it's hard to have any sympathy for him, particularly after he was warned on several occasions that what he was doing was unsafe.
