The tradeoffs are: a rolled-shut valve or not > being able to shut the valve in the event of an emergency. The caveat is that the plastic knobs need to have a metal insert at the interface between the knob and the valve stem (correct word?). Many older plastic knobs do not - the interface is plastic. On several occassions I have stripped the plastic knob interface so that the knob no longer turns the valve - once when I needed the gas for decompression. Keeping the valves lubed and well-maintained should make this a non-issue, but I replaced all my valve knobs anyway. Aloha, Rich
