George made an excellent arguement against using metal knobs, which I advocated to reduce the likelyhood of rolling a valve shut. The point being the knob can be dented if sufficiently struck in such a way that the dent will interfere with the valve body and you will not be able to open or close the valve. The tradeoffs are: a rolled-shut valve or not being able to shut the valve in the event of an emergency. The worst of the two IMHO is the latter as a rolled-shut valve can be easily dealt with. The valve can be reopened after you switched to your backup. I usually check my valve positions periodically during a dive when going through low areas anyways. A stuck valve is truely an emergency if you need to close it. So does anyone want to buy a pair of brass knobs? Mine are for sale. Thanks George, Doug Chapman
