The only way to clear up who said what is to tape all your conversations. That way you can prove your side of the story. I learned a long time ago that there was no honor in the recreational diving industry, each shop, agency and instructor was only interested in their own success. I had a run in with the private company PADI Australia Pty Ltd and if I had not recorded my conversation with their marketing manager I would no longer be a PADI MSDT, up until I played the tape for them it was obvious that my version of events was not believed. I might still be a MSDT but I'm smart enough to know that I'll never make Master Instructor, something about my attitude! That old fall back about the instructor being able to refuse certification due to 'bad attitude' is a classic, sure it does happen but in the main its used as an excuse to cover some form of discrimination, like opening up in competition etc. I wasn't there so I won't attempt to comment on who is telling the truth, but then again that fact hasn't stopped others on the list from taking sides, has it? The bottom line is that Gerard's version of events is just as plausible as Bob and Tom's,so much so that it is becoming the norm rather than the exception. As for catching and documenting untruthful comments, that relies on your total faith in that person and their personal standards/ethics, something that has recently been exposed as lacking in substance. I for one will never take one persons word over that of another or one agency's word against another, not without something more substantial to back it up eg.witnesses. To all concerned parties I strongly suggest you tape all your business dealings after all it's 100% going to cover your ass! Paul O'Malley PADI MSDT NAUI IT
