Another thing I forgot about; it's very good for keeping the harness down
where it's supposed to be on the surface.  I do have enough experience to
vouch for this one.  One my second or third dive with doubles I forgot to
hook up the crotch strap before going over the side.  When the saftey diver
handed my stage bottle to me, I couldn't find the lower D ring I wanted to
clip the bottle to.  Since my crotch strap was unhooked and my BC was almost
fully inflated, I was hanging in the harness by the shoulder straps and
the whole rig had ridden up on my body.

I figured out what I'd done wrong, handed the stage back to the boat,
connected the crotch strap and started over.  Second time I had no problem.

So the crotch strap makes the whole BC a bit like a climbing harness; you
end up 'sitting' in it on the surface instead of hanging from your arms.

Since you don't use stages, this probably wouldn't be very usefull.
