The crotch strap is supposed to keep the rig from shifting up (down really)
when you're inverted.  I've never gotten inverted with mine off (I mean,
when I wasn't wearing the strap) so I don't know how necessary it is, but
judging from the pressure exerted by the strap, I'd say it was doing something.

I have one because it was recommended equipment.  Like the chest strap, I'll
probably need 50 to 100 dives with it to decide if it has real utility.
Pity us beginers, we're at the mercy of our teachers ;).

BTW, I don't keep it so tight that I have to loosen it to reach my valves,
I was just following Jason's original statement.  I keep it tight enough
to catch the rig if it shifts more than 2 or 3 inches.  I also don't
pretend to have the experience needed to argue the tradeoff between dual
independants and manifolds, I was just observing that turning off your
valves was not something that took a contortionist or a missing evolutionary
link.
