Depends on how conservative you want to be.  I prefer a gage on the pony
whether I'm carrying it on back attached to the twins, or hanging on my
side.  I'm sure, like anything else, if you look hard enough you can find
shorter hose lengths, I use standard sizes looped between several cut
innertube bands along the side of the pony, this works fine for me.  Several
ty-wraps and you're in business.  Like a good dive buddy I once had said,
keep it simple and flexible.
