Subject: TEST: Draeger NEMO reg
A couple of weeks ago I tried the new Draeger NEMO regulator. Dive was
performed with air by human (not breathing simulator) in open sea and at a
depth of 30 m. The NEMO 2nd stage was part of a system called CHINOOK (by
Draeger) and composed of one unballanced 1st stage, one CONSEIL octopus reg
(basically a NEMO reg with 1 m hose), one pressure gauge and the NEMO. The
1st stage is a sturdy rated 300bar metal block wit a DIN connection, with
two HP outlet and four LP outlet; the medium pressure could be adjusted from
8 to 12.5 bar. The real interesting thing is the NEMO 2nd stage: the
principle of working is upstream balanced; there is an overpressure valve on
one side of the reg. The shell is made of ABS and the diaphram, bubble
deflector and mouthpiece are made of silicon rubber. The shape of the reg
remember the ScubaPro Pilot design (with the Valve/diaphram on the bottom)
and is very hydrodynamic and ergonomic (unfortunately I don't remember the
weight !). Interesting is that the discharge air valve is built in the
diaphram. The design is simple and reliable; the hart of the sistem is the
needle valve (operated by the diaphram/lever assembly during the inhalation
cicle) that seal the air flow with a sort of metallic mushroom head on top.
Breathing in water was easy and smooth without any significant resistance
and without the typical "inflating" sensation of the venturi effect of other
regulators; no water ingress in any breathing position.
I hope that my explanation is clear enough for everybody (my English is
mediocre) and if someone need more details I'm at disposal. It will be
interesting to analize some P-V loop diagrams at various depth or some bench
test.

Cheers,
Roberto
