Ed, Although I am definitely not qualified to render an opinion on decompression theory, I think I am qualified to render an opinion on this. I think that Jess was pointing out that most messages circulated of this kind are a hoax. I for one am sick and tired of it; hoax information sites should be common knowledge by now, and people desirous of warning their friends and colleagues of potential problems should first attempt to see if the warning is in fact valid. Furthermore, people receiving petitions, invitations to mail postcards to sick children and the like should do the same thing. Furthermore, we all know that the simple act of *reading* an email message cannot do any harm to anything -- except, perhaps, one's sensibilities. As you so astutely pointed out, THE ATTACHMENT MUST BE OPENED FOR HARM TO BE CAUSED. A very easy way for even the stupidest end-user to avoid this is simply not to go clicking on things if they don't know what they are. In addition to the sites that you and Jess listed, I have found some good information at the Mining Company site, www.urbanlegends,.com, www.urbanlegends.com and www.hoaxkill.com. When in doubt, I check these sites.
