Tom, What is with YOU!!!! Any cylinder that is out of my hands damn-well gets analyzed by me BEFORE I slap a regulator on it. It doesn't matter which dive shop you are talking about. The fact that this person almost "bought the farm" illustrates why this is important. Complacency kills. Are you arguing that the student was justified in risking his life by not analyzing the gas, or that it is unreasonable to expect that a competent instructor would have insisted that the gas be analyzed? The bottom line is: 1) "some idiot filled a cylinder labeled as air with a hot mix" per your email 2) Some idiot student did not analyze a cylinder that was out of his hands over night. 3) Some idiot instructor allowed the idiot student to dive a cylinder without analyzing. 4) The instructor pulled the students chestnuts out of the fire. The silver lining of an otherwise dark cloud. Looks to me like 3 people screwed up. By far, the biggest screw up was that of the instructor in terms of responsibility. The reason for instruction is to help students survive by avoiding known causes of death, not to help them experience them prematurely. -John > Bill > What is with you.
