Ken and Adam, I have two Odins, and a USD SEA. I've dove with Sherwood, Mares, Zeagle, Scubapro, and probably a few others, many of them are unnotable, not bad, not outstanding (the TEK50D Severe being one that stands out in my mind as a VERY nice reg as is the G250). The Odins need to be serviced by a *competant* person (I get the feeling that more people proclaim to be cometant than actually are, but isn't that true with most things these days?). One of the maladies of these regs (Odins) is "fluttering" at shallow depths (this sounds VERY strangs and if it has ever happened to you, you'll know). After I had mine adjusted the 2nd time it went away and has worked perfectly ever since. I hang an Odin on my pony (some of you know that I just caught some grief about that on rec.scuba). When it's NOT in your mouth and in the water you had best be sure that the switch is in the "-" position. I once forgot this on a shallow dive and only had a 17 cu ft pony - BAM it was emptied faster than i could get to it! The Odins are well known for flowing a LOT of air. Some people say they breathe wet, some say they don't. When doing video I'm often in some rather peculiar orientations and I HAVE noticed that it breaths a little wet in some of these upsidedown, to the side, orientations. I just suck in slowly so as to not aspirate the water and when I right myself, the water is gone. The very real complaint has been made that they breathe wet when scootering. Since to date I have no experience with scootering I can't address this, but it's from a very reliable source (George). So, when i start scootering, I'll swith to G250 2nd stages on my Poseidin 1st stage. The USD has been a very good reg, probably better than most people give it credit for. I've breathed it down to 275'. Only once or twice have I come close to it's limitations and that was on a dive around 180' when I was swimming hard to get some video. The old "sucking air through a straw" feeling was quite strange - didn't really bother me, I just lived with it until I was done with the video, relaxed and let my air consumption return to normal. SOME people would panic under a situation like this, but, then again, most people shouldn't be doing what I was doing at 180' either. I figured if worse came to worse I could stop, switch to my pony (with the Odin) and take it easy). I didn't have two Odins at that point. The other disadvantage of the Odin is the god awful price for long hoses (I paid $95 for a 7' hose!). As some people will point out though, the 1st stage of these regs is easy to adjust and it is preferred among people whose judgement I value (they prefer the Scubapro G250 2nd stage). That's my $.03 (adjusted for inflation)... -Carl-
