Every regulator a shop owner is trying to sell you is the "Best Reg". 
Same goes for instructors who work for shops, or get a commission.

It's an unfortunate fact of life. Although I have no experience with 
the Abyss (or any other Mares regulator for that matter), I can tell 
you my regulator of choice is the Scubapro MK-10/G-250. However, this 
combo usually sells for around $429 (if you shop around you can beat 
it). This is my regulator of choice. I don't work for a shop and I'm 
not saying this because I shelled out some $$$ for one. Other people 
like the Odin's. Best suggestion, find a regulator highly 
recommended, and see if you can dive it to test it out. Not in a 
pool, but on a real dive.
