Subject: belabored EANx Stickers
Reading through the piles of stuff posted here regarding how to mark tanks
used for mixes other than air I would like to make two points. The first
has to do with putting an air fill into a tank marked for Nitrox...if the
air is free of compressed hydrocarbons, what's the big deal? Most EANx
stations use partial pressure method to deliver EANx and the air they pump
has to be compatible with O2. Buy fills from an outfit that has invested
the time and money into delivery a quality product...simple. If you have to
get fills from the local firehall from time to time, use different tanks
that are not prepped for EANx or Mix.

Point two, the big mother nitrox sticker itself. Here in Ontario, as Chris
Richardson wrote a while ago, shops will not fill a tank with EANx unless
it carries a vip/o2 service sticker and a nitrox sticker. Added to this is
the <should be> standard practice of marking the ODL of the analysised mix
somewhere prominant. Some agencies also call for date, fill pressure,
initials and FO2 to be clearly marked: this inspite of the maximum depth
being the only thing there's room for...Our tanks therefore are plastered
with more paper than the outside walls of a Paris pissoir...and that's a
shame. Frankly I wish we could just have the VIP sticker and the
ODL...forget the nitrox sticker and forget the name address, mother's
maiden name stuff...I feel the same way about them as I do about jackets
displaying patches for <specialty courses>.

But, most of us share space on dive boats and at dive sites with people we
don't know. In this case, adopting a standard way of marking
cylinders...and sticking to it...is a way of managing the risk attached to
diving a gas other than air...for everyone. We just have to arrive at the
standard. The skull and cross bones is a nice touch but should be saved for
argon bottles, which leaves us with the nitrox sticker...Perhaps if the
things were just a little smaller I'd like them more.....
