Well for me it was when dive stores required me to start having a Nitrox Card. So I took Technical Nitrox. :) Seriously though, I don't want to represent myself as an accomplished diver of any sort. I have been very fortunate to have been able to rub elbows with some very accomplished divers who were in a position to answer my questions and point me in the right direction when they didn't have answers. The only thing formal education (can I call dive training "formal"?) does is condense the time frame it takes to accumulate knowledge and provide you the benefit of others experience. That'a obviously a positive. There is also a negative. An especially big negative when your life may be dependant of the information being imparted. In other words do you trust your instructional agency and instructor to be correct? From that perspective I chose to be educated with respect to "technical" diving informally. Sorting the wheat from the chaffe slowly and ardously. the old adage is appropriate: He who knows not and knows he knows not is a student teach him, He who knows and knows not he knows is asleep awake him. He who knows and knows he knows is a techer learn from him. He who knows not and knows not he knows not is a fool shun him. If you are a line 1 you need it, seek a line 3 NOT a line 4. Oh wow, my brain is tired so I'm gonna retire for the evening. Safe Diving Grasshopper r.b.
