As far as I know breathing off the BC is not taught because there is a
risk for infections caused by bacteria ( and probably some other stuff too)
that grow inside the BC.
Personally, I clean the inside of my BC two to three times a year with
'Chloramine', a commercially available desinfectant. However, I think this
is hardly enough for something you want to breathe from.

Does anyone know what is the procedure for breathing bags in rebreathers?

Of course, I only want to point out that there is a potential risk involved.
When the alternative is drowning, the choice is clear (to me at least).
