---- Microsoft Mail "VMS Mail" message ---- From: HeimannJ on Thu, Feb 18, 1993 9:37 AM Subject: Bends & Neuro Damage To: techdiver Joseph Crunk raises an interesting issue in his DCIEM table note: >I guess the autopsy slides of damaged cerebral/spinal/bone tissue >from fatal DCS hits left an impression. Lippman, I believe, refers to a study based on autopsies of professional divers who died from nondiving accidents, which indicated that cerebrospinal lesions were found in many of them. As I recall, those who had been treated for DCS, even with apparent total resolution of symptoms, showed evidence of neurological damage. Does anyone know of a similar study of sport divers? I already kill enough brain cells through aging and beer to worry about them dying while diving. On a not entirely unrelated note: despite being a leading center for hospitals, medical training and research, and having a large community of divers, the Boston area has no active hyperbaric chamber. The nearest ones are the US Navy Chamber in Groton, Connecticut, and another one in Sanford, Maine, both a two hour drive from here. I have heard rumors that this is because the Mass. Blue Cross Insurance Co. doesn't want to pay for hyperbaric therapy, even though it is also the best treatment for CO poisoning, and is useful to prevent infection from burns, etc. My question is, does anyone have experience in mobilizing some action to get a chamber in their area? How does one go about convincing a hospital that this is a good thing to do?
