This won't be news to many of the Australian subscribers to this list, but there was a fatality a few weeks ago on the wreck of the Coolooli which lies in about 55m off the coast of Sydney. The diver, Paul Cavanagh, is thought to have had an O2 hit. He was carrying air and 50/50 nitrox on his back, both being fed to a block which supplied his main second stage. His buddy reported to me: He was breathing from the wrong side. Simply as that... The hit came about 18 minutes into the dive. I was out in front. I dropped to the sand, momentarily out of their sight. I would have been gone maybe a minute. As I swam back towards Paul (and the anchor) I saw him inverted and his fins (all I could see on him. He was partly hidden by funnel) were trembling. By the time I got to him rigor had set in. His reg was out of his mouth. His mask was half full. Paul was an experienced deep diver, and an open water and cave instructor. He'd dived the Coolooli many times, and it had in fact been the site of his previous three dives. He apparently arrived late for the dive that day and set up his gear on the beach. He wasn't wearing a full face mask. Greg Ryan gregr@cs*.su*.oz*.au*
