The prime advantage of the OMS S/S backplate is when using a dry suit (IMHO). The weight of the backplate will eliminate or greatly reduce the need for carrying lead weights. Even with a neoprene dry suit I find no need for carrying weights (using steel tanks) and only a few pounds if using double aluminum tanks. On the side of ABS, they seem to be more resistant to hole enlargement where the mounting bolts go through.
