The prime advantage of the OMS S/S backplate is when using a dry suit 
(IMHO).  The weight of the backplate will eliminate or greatly reduce the 
need for carrying lead weights.  Even with a neoprene dry suit I find no 
need for carrying weights (using steel tanks) and only a few pounds if 
using double aluminum tanks.  On the side of ABS, they seem to be more 
resistant to hole enlargement where the mounting bolts go through.  The 
steel tank mounting bolts wollowed out the holes in my aluminum backplate 
in short order.
